Even the rain could not discourage our students to take learning outside the classroom and experience Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty. Students were able to experience their textbooks come alive from the viewpoint of an immigrant who would have arrived there from Europe between the years 1892-1924. While visiting, students and their chaperones participated in a staff-guided tour of the unrestored hospital. They also viewed interactive displays that featured visuals and descriptions of life in the United States during colonial times. Students could visit the Registry Room, the American Immigrant Wall of Honor, see Abandoned Artifacts, and watch a documentary film titled Island of Hope,Island of Tears.
After touring Ellis Island, students took another ferry to Liberty Island. On the short ferry ride, students and their chaperones were greeted with views of both the Manhattan and Jersey City skyline. There they were able to meet park rangers who talked to them about the history of the Statue of Liberty and how it arrived in the United States from France.
