On a brisk fall day, October 17th, our third-grade students from Saint John the Apostle School embarked on their first-ever grade-level retreat at Rahway Park, led by our spiritual director, Father Gabe Comacho. Surrounded by vibrant autumn colors, the retreat focused on “Communication,” teaching students about the importance of listening with open hearts.
The day began with a group prayer, and Father Gabe shared his morning rituals as a priest, explaining how he begins each day with a moment of quiet reflection. Throughout the day, students participated in team games that required close listening and collaboration. From following directions while blindfolded to working together to overcome challenges, each activity emphasized the power of communication. There were moments of laughter, as not every game went according to plan, but students quickly learned how vital listening is for success.
A highlight of the retreat was a visit from Sister Anne of St. Joseph's Church in West Orange. She shared her journey to sisterhood, explaining how she discovered her path by listening to her heart. Her story encouraged students to stay attuned to what brings them joy, as it might reveal God’s purpose for them.
By the end of the day, the third graders, initially divided into four groups, had bonded as one big team. They returned to school not only with memories of a beautiful fall day outdoors, but with valuable insights into communication, trust, and the importance of listening to one another and to God.
